FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
More Than A Pretty Face: The Essential Handbook for Canadian Models
What motivated you to write this book?
In my 14 years as a model, I have been bombarded by questions from young people and their parents. Teens are curious about modeling and their parents are cautious. Until I wrote More Than A Pretty Face, a Canadian resource, to help them and guide them through their concerns, did not exist.
Where can parents and teens buy More Than A Pretty Face?
The book is available online at www.featherbooks.ca, or by ordering it from 1-877-774-BOOK. Shipping is FREE, and the book costs $30 plus GST.
How did you get into the business?
I started taking a modeling course in Waterloo, just for fun. I had no idea it would turn into the career it has! I feel very fortunate.
Were your own parents cautious about your career choice?
Initially, my parents were nervous about the modeling business, because they didn’t know much about it. However, they were supportive because they knew that it was something I wanted to pursue.
What is your greatest piece of advice for a parent whose child is interested in modeling?
The more parents can learn about the business, the more they can be supportive of their teens’ ambitions.
What was your most memorable job to date?
I once shot a chocolate bar commercial in Austria where I got to bite into 300 chocolate bars. Needless to say, I gained three pounds in three days, but I had fun!
What is the best part of modeling?
The experience of traveling and working around the world is unparalleled.
What is the hardest part of modeling?
The rejection is difficult to handle, but like anything else, with experience, maturity and perspective, it becomes easier.
How can parents and young people interested in the business avoid scams?
Everyone needs to do his or her homework. More Than A Pretty Face provides a great foundation from which to start. Just as you wouldn’t invest in a company that appeared over night, you shouldn’t go to a modeling agency without references or industry buy-in.
Can models who aren’t supermodels achieve financial success?
Absolutely! In More Than A Pretty Face, I profile seven models and all of them work as models and actors full time.
Is it difficult for teenaged models to balance a career as a model and a healthy social life?
Devoting time to any career as a teenager, makes less time available for socializing. A career in modeling can be especially difficult because not all teens will be gracious about someone else enjoying such a seemingly glamorous profession.
Did you ever feel pressure to be extremely thin?
I have felt that pressure in my life, however, because I’m not naturally a toothpick, I never did the jobs that require that look. My look has always been more wholesome and girl-next-door-ish. That being said, I have seen models sent home from jobs because they were too thin!
Do you find that people have inaccurate perceptions of the business?
Yes. I find that teens often have an overly optimistic view of the industry, whereas parents seem to have an especially pessimistic view of the business. Of course, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
TOP MODEL TIPS REVEALED
Quick Top Model Tip: (p.40)
When wearing hosiery or trouser socks, wear “toe socks” over your big toe to prevent runs. These can be purchased in the hosiery section of department stores for about $1.
Quick Top Model Tip: (p.43)
Carry Bioré Cleansing Cloths in your bag to quickly remove make-up after work, before the gym OR to clean dirt off your shoe or boot in a squeeze!
Quick Top Model Tip: (p.52)
If you’re out of acne cream, use toothpaste instead. Just a small amount on a pimple overnight will do the trick. But don’t use toothpaste more than two nights in a row because it’s a very powerful drying agent.
Quick Top Model Tip: (p.52)
If you’re worried about rain, snow, or tears on your lashes, try using Estée Lauder’s Raincoat. It’s a clear layer you apply on top of your mascara to protect the mascara from smudging, as long as you don’t rub you lashes.
Quick Top Model Tip: (p.55)
Before plucking your eyebrows, rub an ice cube on the area to numb the skin. Afterwards, apply witch hazel on your skin to soothe the sensitive area and prevent irritation.
Quick Top Model Tip: (p.57)
Banish build-up from shampoo and styling products with a white vinegar rinse (keep the good stuff for the kitchen!) To make the rinse, mix 4 parts water with 1 part white vinegar. Removing build-up helps your hair respond better to products and styling agents.
Quick Top Model Tip: (p.62)
Place rubbing alcohol soon after you shave your bikini line to disinfect the area and prevent red bumps and/or ingrown hairs. To minimize ingrown hair, use a loofah sponge to exfoliate the area.
